TESTING THE SOIL TYPE IN YOUR KITCHEN GARDEN

(SOIL TEST)

HOW TO TEST THE TYPE OF SOIL AVAILABLE IN YOUR LAWN?

Soil Test
A small soil test can reveal the type of soil you have in your lawn.

  • Fill a jar with clean water
  • Take a handful of soil and mix in water jar
  • Stir well
  • Leave it for 3-4 hours to settle
  • Observe the results as follow

Sandy soil will sink down to bottom with most of its particles and leave the water clear.

Silt soil is almost the same as clay soil; hence it has some sandy particles that make a tiny layer in the bottom of the jar. It also leaves hazy water in the jar. You can observe it a step upward in the jar.

Clay Soil will leave rusty, dirty and cloudy water with a thin layer of its particles in the bottom of the jar. It takes a lot of time to settle all particles and they appear for a long time in the water.

When it comes to Peaty Soil, you will observe lots of tiny particles or pieces of natural compost will appear at the surface. While a thin layer of residue will amount at the bottom. Water will change the color in the greyish shade.

Chalky Soil will form grainy remains with a white layer in the bottom. It turns the visibility of water into pale grey.

LOAMY SOIL will leave the water clear and all fine particles on top with water and remains on the bottom.

CHECK THE COMBINATION/COMPONENT OF YOUR SOIL

Soil Test

Besides of all above, you can mix the multiple soils for best results. First, check the ratio of available soils in your lawn.
  • Fill a jar with water
  • Measure a handful of soil
  • Put it in the jar
  • Shake well
  • Leave it for some hours to settle
  • Observe the results
The bottom layer is sand; water mixture is clay and silt, while the top layer is loamy or peaty.

Now, you can add another type of required soils in your lawn for better results.
