SOIL TYPES KITCHEN GARDEN

 Soil types
There are many prepared soil types available in markets that are less in cost, hassle free and good in the result. They have the perfect combination of PH, calcium and all other nutrients that are necessary for the growth of plants. But these soil types are good for pots and containers only. When you are planning to grow your plants in a comparative big area you need the proper ratio of all necessary type of soil i.e.
clay, sand and fertilizer.  By taking care of this ratio, you can get better results.

Our earth has different surfaces. There are deserts, Rocky cliffs, green meadows, plains, hill area, sandy beaches and ice-pack areas. Normally people living in plains can get the best soil type as they require not many fertilizers. They have a naturally good soil to grow the plants of all kinds. We can observe following types of soil in various areas of the world.

  • SANDY
  • SILTY
  • CLAY
  • PEATY
  • SALINE/CHALKY
  • LOAMY

Soil types

SOIL TYPE _SANDY

CHARACTERISTICS

It has very large particles as compared to other types of soils. It is grainy and rough to touch; when you take a small amount of it in your hand and leave, no rust or dirt left behind. On squeezing in hand and releasing out, it slipped all and will not stay as a lump. It has different colors in different areas, mostly grey and sometimes black and white in various parts of the world.

 QUALITIES
This type of soil is good for growing material for small plants. It gives perfect drainage to water and stores well for dampness. You also require less fertilizer of this type as it helps roots to move down very easily. It is good to pass sir through it particles.

DISADVANTAGES
There are some problems with this type. It cools down and heats up very fast and this may harm the delicate plants. Due to its tendency, we cannot grow the plants that require more water. Also in wet seasons, it washes away the important nutrients due to its most absorbent qualities.

SOIL TYPE - SILTY
CHARACTERISTICS
Silt soil is also known as a river sand or canal soil. It is smooth to touch and its particles are small as compare to sandy texture. By taking a handful of this type, it leaves little dust behind on the skin. Squeeze it gently in your hand and release, the shape will be intact for a while and breakdown with a touch.

QUALITIES
A good one for plant growth of all types, as air, can pass through easily up to roots. It has good drainage capacity and keeps moisture for a long time, has good cultivating qualities as compared to sandy soil. It requires less management and supervision.

DISADVANTAGES
The problem that appears very often, it is easily compacted because of the weak structure of the soil. A little management is required to overcome this issue.

SOIL TYPE-CLAY

CHARACTERISTICS
It is a good composition of different qualities. Mostly it is brown in color and has good nutrients for plants. It is sticky to touch and have many lumps, holds moisture for a very long time. Sticky in wet conditions and hard in dry form. Upon taking a handful and squeezing it gently, it formed into a fist shape and stay. It also leaves the dirt on the skin.

QUALITIES
This type is very effective for kitchen gardening if mixed with the different ratio of other soils. It has small particles as compared to sandy and salty soil. It has less space for air movement also it is slow to drainage. This kind of soil is good in springs as it retains warmth and cools down slowly.

DISADVANTAGES
It needs proper care and maintenance. All alone it is not much value in various parts of the world but if it is managed well, it becomes a precious one for cultivation.

PEATY SOIL

CHARACTERISTICS
Peaty soil is a type of soil that is formed due to decomposition of natural matters such as old trees drowned in water. It is spongy to touch. This organic matter is dark in color and has few nutrients to plant growth.

QUALITIES
It warms up quickly in springs and has more water retention qualities. Peaty soil is good for some kind of cultivation like small plants but if mixed with fertilizers and salty soil it can be a gem.

DISADVANTAGES
No viable disadvantage of this type hence some care and proper fertilizer addition is required. Other than above, coconut peat is also being used these days to grow seedlings and small plants.

SALINE OR CHALKY SOIL

CHARACTERISTICS
Saline or Chalky soil is an alkaline soil and contains salt content in it. It is usually dry and hard, visibly a white coating or overlay of chalky matter. There are hard and rocky stones found in it.

QUALITIES
It has less nutrient and not feasible for proper growth of plants.  Preferably, if maintained well by removing stones and adding enough fertilizer it can be useful for some cultivation.

DISADVANTAGES
It weakens the trees and pales the leaves due to its rare nutrient values. Generally, it is not a good one for cultivation.

LOAMY SOIL

CHARACTERISTICS
It is dark in color and has a good combination of PH and calcium. It is dry, soft and powdery to touch.

QUALITIES
This soil type is called a perfect soil for cultivation for its effective qualities. It is full of nutrients, having a great structure that drains well whereas also it retains moisture to help to grow and allow air to move easily. It warms up quickly in springs and does not dry out in hot summers.

DISADVANTAGE
It is a blessing for those having it in their surroundings. It is the best choice with no disadvantages.
