(GARDEN SOIL)

PERFECT SOIL FOR KITCHEN GARDEN/LAWN

Soil Mixture

Loamy soil is the best option for all kind of plants. So, what if we do not have this type of garden soil available around? The solution is the mixture of matters like peat moss, compost, and vermiculite. This makes a perfect mixture and you can use it in lawn or container.

The second way is a mixture
of clay, silt, and sand. Mix them in equal quantity; this will result in an ideal texture of the garden soil. The proportion may differ in the case to a requirement of some specific plant but generally, there is no need of it in kitchen gardening. This all knowledge will come with the passage of time. As you go deep into gardening, you will learn much. Information provided in books or blogs may differ from your experience in some cases. But, this situation is not alarming at all. You will get your experience with your errors and wrongs.

You should monitor your garden soil first; know about the conditions of your garden soil. If it is dense or hard enough to dig then you should smooth it well to let it soft enough for plantation. Now mix sand in right proportion so that the soil can be able to hold dampness and make air pocket for air flow. Likewise, if the soil is too loose then you may add a different kind of peat to let the water stay for a good time.

Fertilizers are also necessary for the growth of plants and for a valuable garden soil. By checking the soil, with suitable intervals, you will easily learn when it is required to sprinkle the fertilizer. If a plant is not growing and not giving flowers or fruit as it was in its previous season then it is the right time to provide it with proper fertilizer.

PERFECT SOIL FOR POTS AND CONTAINERS

Soil for pots and containers should be different from lawn soil. In lawns, there are more chances of soil improvements available as it adjusted somehow with many natural benefits like dried leaves or earthworms.  They help the soil to boost its abilities. But pots and containers need the soil that is well aerated, well-drained, pest free and it should retain moisturizer for enough time. Although you have all qualities in your lawn soil, still I am not going to suggest that soil for your containers or hanging pots.

You may think why I am not in favor of lawn soil for pots as many others are doing the same and getting the results. That depends on the type of soil, if it is safe, it will give good results. But mostly it is not safe in many conditions. Actually, lawn soil may contain weeds, insects, and seeds. Birds are regular visitors to your lawn; their waste may contain different seeds that grow without your permission. Also, there is a threat of diseases to delicate plants. These all things can damage your seedlings or plants and destroy your all efforts.

There is one option of prepared soil that is available in bags with different brand names. It is also called soilless material for better results and the good mixture of nutrients, peat, and fertilizers. It gives nutrient food to your plants. Further, these types of soils are being carefully packed to avoid various pests. It is an ideal to start a vegetable or herbs container. A good suggestion is for a beginner that you should add 25% of soil to this type of media. By adding this, results will be excellent as the soil is very important for plants. Through this way, you can increase the life of bag media for further many years.

If there is a rare possibility that you cannot manage to get this material from market then you may use lawn soil with satisfactory additions. Add more peat, leaf fertilizer and compost to your lawn soil and spray some organic/natural pesticide for pest control. The ratio should be soil 50%, coconut or other peat 30% and compost of leaves 20%. Let it stay for few days and mix them on alternate days. This will let the soil mix well with all components. After a week or ten days, depending on the weather, this soil is ready to add to your containers.
