COMPOSTING PROCEDURE

(COMPOSTING PROCEDURE)

Select a place for composting procedure

To start composting procedure, first, decide which type of composting suits your available resources. Select a proper place for starting the procedure. This place should neither be in direct sunlight nor a shady all the day. It requires an almost equal amount of
sunlight and shade during the day.

LAYERING

Composting procedure
It is fundamental to start composting procedure. All you need to make layers of green and brown material one by one at first stage. You require green material i.e. leaves, grass clipping, peel of vegetables etc. This will be layered at the base.

Secondly, you need dry material that contains Phosphorus in it e.g. dry leaves, dried tea leaves or rotten stems. You can use old newspaper pieces also. It speeds up the procedure.

Now, repeat the layering accordingly. After some days the pile will get down and leave an ample space. This is the time when you can add more kitchen waste to it. After a month, do not add more until composting procedure ends.

RATIO OF GREEN AND BROWN MATERIAL

I have already mentioned in my composting blog regarding an ideal ratio of both green and brown material.

AIR FLOW

Composting procedure
If you have selected a purpose made bucket for composting then it is ok. Otherwise, you need to make many holes from the top to bottom with appropriate gaps for air flow or to select a bin that already has the vent to air. Also make two to three holes in the base, in order to drain extra water.

DAMPNESS

Composting procedure
Dampness is also a necessary factor to break down; this will help to decompose and rot the big materials. If you leave the compost dry, it will stop to develop decay in the composting material.

SHUFFLING

Composting procedure
Once you complete it, then you have to monitor it regularly. Shuffle the material initially after a week and then after 3-4 days. Although, dampness is necessary for composting when you observe a lot of water in it, then put more dry material in it to balance the pile. On the other hand, if the pile is drying out then sprinkle it with water and shuffle the pile. So that water spreads equally.

A rake or hand trowel is an ideal tool to shuffle the material.

Add more to it

Composting procedure
You can add more material after one week of the start. Add more kitchen waste and dry material as per required ratio. With the passage of time, decaying will squeeze the freshness and natural dampness of material. This material will prickles down very soon and encourage you to add more and more to it.

Final Look/Smell of Composting

Composting procedure
Completion time is around 6-10 months in general and 3-4 months if you take necessary steps to accelerate this procedure. Although we add waste and sometimes such smelly material in it, after completion, surprisingly you will observe a good smell in all compost.
